Serbia between West and East: economic and political factors evaluation
Krdžović, Amel
In this thesis are evaluated economic and political factors which determine relations between Serbia and its main four international partners EU, USA, Russia and China in the time period 2012-2023. To perform this evaluation, I have combined data from Serbian Statistical Office from the international trade database, what has ensured me proper evaluation of economic factors, such as FDI, exports and imports of goods. The other significant part of the sources were journals, research papers and mutual agreements between countries which helped me in qualitative analysis of current and historic political relations. The results have shown how does the cooperation between Serbia and observed countries develop and what can be expected in the future, combined with tendency of Serbian government and Serbian citizens. This thesis emphasizes importance of EU initiative and further development of Serbian economy, in order to ensure continuous growth and fulfilment of Copenhagen’s Criteria from the one side, and preserve negative Russian influence from the other side.
The impact of foreign direct investments on economic growth: the case of Ghana
Tetteh, Mavis
This thesis seeks to investigates the effects of FDI on the Ghana’s gross domestic product advancement. The study applied the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model using data from the World Bank from 1990 to 2021. The Johansen cointegration test indicated a prolong persistent association between the variables. The Collinearity test using the BKW indicates no existence of perfect combination of the explanatory variables. However, the empirical findings displayed that in the long run FDI had no significant effect on the GDP expansion in Ghana whereas there was a positive short-term influence. The study entreats the government and GIPC to continue to strengthen the measures that help to attract FDIs to Ghana and focus on creating a enabling environment for these investments to strive and yield positive economic growth impact in the long run as well.
The Role of FDI in the Green Transition of Central and East Europe Countries: From Empirical Evidence
Huang, Shiyuan ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Li, Yating (referee) ; Paulus, Michal (referee)
This paper empirically examines the role of FDI in the green transition for CEE countries from the perspectives of greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy production. For the analysis of the two perspectives, the PMG and MG estimators based on nonlinear EKC and the fixed effect model were applied to the sample of CEE countries from 2001 to 2021. The results demonstrate that FDI has an inverted U-shaped relationship with greenhouse gas emissions, indicating that FDI accelerates the transition to a greener economy by reducing emissions after the turning point. However, the effect is only significant in the long term, and the turning point threshold varies by income group. On the other hand, there was no evidence of a correlation between FDI and the growth of renewable energy production, but energy intensity would substantially reduce the growth of renewable energy production. To maximise FDI's positive impact on their green transition, empirical evidence suggests CEE nations should implement policies to encourage FDI inflow and direct more investment towards renewable production and sustainable development. Key words: FDI; Green transition; CEE countries; EKC
Foreign Direct Investment in Emerging Markets: The Case of Turkey
Huseynli, Orkhan ; Geršl, Adam (advisor) ; Zeynalov, Ayaz (referee)
This paper studies determinants of FDI in Turkey using panel data analyses. The results of the study show that political stability, education level, rule of law, and trade cost have significant impact on FDI inflow in Turkey while similarity in economy size of home and host country (Turkey) has not. The effect of the trade cost and rule of law was surprising but it gave a clue to new research area. It was concluded that next studies of FDI determinants in Turkey must be conducted at firms' level to better understand the behaviour of foreign direct investments in the country.
Geographical Characteristic of Industry in the Mladá Boleslav Region
Šturmová, Tereza ; Ženka, Jan (advisor) ; Kopačka, Ludvík (referee)
The aim of the presented thesis is to map the most significant impal of the geographical transformation of industry in the administrative district of a municipality with extended powers Mladá Boleslav after 1989. The Mladá Boleslav region is one of the few naturely originated and developed industrial clusters in the Czech Republic with a specific size and sectoral structure of economy (super-dominance of Škoda Auto) and a massive influx of FDI. The restructuring of the industry in Mladá Boleslav did not have much impact on the physical or functional structure of the city. The residential, industrial and eventually service functions of the city remain dominant. In the microregional scale the increasing living standards have made possible a large residential suburbanisation. The most significant change in the geographical structure of Mlada Boleslav was the construction of new industrial zones on the outskirts of the city and on the adjacent communities and the associated technical infrastructure modernization and growth of road transportation. Mlada Boleslav in the course of more than twenty years of industry transformation after 1989 not only maintained but also strengthened the distinct functional specialization in the automotive industry. Keywords: transformation of the industry, the Mladá Boleslav...
China's Outward FDI in Central and Eastern Europe
Li, Wenjie ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee) ; Korosteleva, Julia (referee)
China's emergence as one of the largest FDI source country has attracted global attention. There are many researches on the determinants and characteristics of China's outward FDI, but there are only few researches about China's outward FDI in CEE countries. Based on the dataset, which comprises data of 11 CEE EU member states over the period 2003-2014, this thesis investigates the determinants and patterns of China's outward FDI in CEE-11 countries by using a panel data technique. The regression results reveal that for the whole sample period, culture proximity and existing trade relation have significantly positive impacts and China's FDI in CEE-11 is negatively associated with the institution environment of host country. And the results also demonstrate that determinants of China's FDI in CEE-11 change over time. Besides, political relation is also an important influential factor and policy makers should put more effort to strengthen the bilateral cooperation.
Determinants of FDI location across European Countries: role of economic and non-economic factors in decision-making by means of econometric analysis of panel data for 1995-2010
Brázdová, Martina ; Benáček, Vladimír (advisor) ; Bobková, Božena (referee)
This thesis provides an insight into factors that determine FDI inflows. Our focus is on FDI inflows directed to European countries and we study the FDI phenomena both from theoretical and practical view. We extend the literature that highlights the importance of FDI- institution link, and hypothesise that countries with better institutional quality should attract more foreign direct investments. This is in accord with expectation that good institutions create better investment environment in terms of lower costs of doing business and lower risk. The main purpose of this thesis is to complement previous studies that have covered this topic, but did not account for years of financial crisis. The key part analyses panel data for 33 European economies in the period from 1995 to 2010. A model of FDI determinants is constructed and estimated using panel data estimation techniques. The empirical part has revealed that even though some of the institutional variables are significant, they remain rather additional in explaining FDI flows; whereas the traditional economic variables are clearly significant. Our results are intuitively consistent with theoretical expectations and show that market growth, low trade restrictions, good infrastructure and low labour costs are key FDI drivers. Other important...
Impact of Czech polititians foreign activities on development of foreign trade and investment
Hofman, Pavel ; Tomeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Blažek, Jan (referee)
With the continuing process of globalization, national economies are intensively interconnecting with external enviroment. It is especially visible for Czech Republic, which geopolitical position stresses the importance of external business relationships. Economic prosperity of countries with open economy is largely determined by export performance and inflow of foreign direct investments, both of which are supported by economic diplomacy. The first scope of this thesis is to evaluate the economic diplomacy of Czech Republic, and secondly to empirically analyze the tools, which economic diplomacy is using - foreign visits of polititians and role of embassies. The gravity model of international trade was used to study the influence of both tools on the foreign trade and investment in Czech Republic between years 1993-2013. The results show, that if at least one visit per year was realized, the export grows by 14%. However, one average high official visit is associated with rising exports by about 4.7%. On the other hand, any realtionship with FDI was not found. Further analysis confirms the importance of the embassies and thier positive impact on foreign trade, in particular with culturally distant countries, where this effect is more pronounced. Futhermore the study showed fading effect of economic...
The globalisation of the Chinese financial sector
Reyisha, Ahemaitijiang ; Teplý, Petr (advisor) ; Havránková, Zuzana (referee)
In this thesis we have studied China's financial sector globalisation by analysing the determinants of Chinese banking sector profitability, and the relationship between GDP growth and FDI inflows. For estimating the Chinese banking sector profitability, we applied system GMM estimation on the annual data of 56 banks currently in China. The time period of the data is from 2002-2011. We found out that both internal and external factors have impact on the Chinese banking sector profitability. As we have expected financial sector globalisation has positive impact on the profitability of banking industry. For analysing the impacts of financial sector globalisation in terms of FDI contribution to the Chinese economy, we have tested the relationship between FDI and GDP by running the VAR model on the macro data over the time period of 1987-2011. We have found that GDP growth explains the rapid development of FDI, and FDI indirectly influences the GDP growth by influencing the domestic investments.
